How to fix water in an iPhone speaker
- Turn the volume all the way up. On iPhone, flip the silent switch to ring — while it shows orange, web audio is muted and nothing will happen.
- Take off headphones and unpair earbuds. If AirPods are connected, the tone goes to them instead of the phone speaker — painfully.
- Hold the phone speaker-down. The bottom speaker is next to the charging port; the top speaker is the earpiece slot above the screen. Point whichever is muffled at the floor, over a towel.
- Press Start and wait 45 seconds. You may see tiny droplets appear on the grille or the towel. That is the water leaving.
- Play a song to test. Still muffled? Press Run again. Try Vibrate mode on the third run.
- Then leave it. After three runs, air-dry for 30 minutes and try once more. Do not use a hairdryer, and do not put it in rice.
Works best right after the phone got wet, while the water is still liquid. Dried mineral residue does not vibrate out.

Does this really work?
Yes, for water in the speaker — and it is the same trick your smartwatch uses. A speaker is a paper-thin diaphragm on a coil. At 165 Hz the diaphragm of a phone speaker moves close to its largest excursion, so each cycle gives the water droplets sitting in the mesh a physical shove. Water only stays in the grille because of surface tension; a few hundred shoves a second break it, and the droplets get pushed out through the holes. Hold the speaker facing down and gravity finishes the job.
Apple Watch’s Water Lock does exactly this — it plays a tone and you can watch the droplets leave the grille. Samsung Galaxy Watch and several Android phones (OnePlus, Xiaomi) ship the same feature under “speaker cleaner”. This page just gives every phone the button.
What it does not do
- Charging port. Sound does nothing there — the port has no diaphragm. Playing a tone over a “liquid detected” warning is wasted time. What actually works for the port.
- Dust and lint. Loose dust may fall out during a run, but compacted pocket lint does not. For that, a soft dry toothbrush or a piece of Blu-Tack pressed gently on the grille beats any sound.
- A blown speaker. If the sound is crackly and quiet without the phone ever getting wet, the voice coil is damaged. No tone fixes hardware.

Do not run the tone over and over on a speaker that is already dry. Pushing a dry diaphragm at full volume for minutes on end can loosen the voice coil and leave a permanent rattle. Three runs, then let it air-dry.
